My hope is that this resource proves valuable to the Australian community and does help to strengthen the openess and affordability of publicly produced information.
In January 2019 I completed a nine year engagement at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology as its Business Support Manager then more recently Customer Costing Manager. I know from the time when I was a novice public servant in late 2009 how unnatural it can feel for commercial people to not charge for valuable information.
I am grateful to the many long serving senior officials at the Bureau for imparting to me their knowledge and sensitivity in serving the public interest. Sadly many have left over the last two years as new leadership moved in to be followed by management change. And as long term corporate memory wanes, destructive thoughts of commerce inevitably rises again particularly when fanned by the Cormann changes.
